Tracking U.S. Wildfires

While wildfires are a natural part of our world, the intersection of climate change and urban/wildland interface are leading to larger, faster and deadlier events.

Current U.S. Relative Humidity

Oklahoma Mesonet

Relative humidity is a leading indicator for wildfire risk. Percentages of about 15 to 25 are in the fire weather watch/red flag warning range and can help lead to explosive wildfire development.

Current U.S. wind speed

Wind and fire don’t mix well. Where there is an overlap of low relatively humidity and strong winds, odds will be increased of fire if other conditions — like the season — are also right. Gusts of 20 to 30 mph and higher are particularly troublesome for firefighters.
